Soothing for the throat

Infusion Long infusion

A blend of plants traditionally reputed to be soothing, used to ease the throat and the comfort of the airways (sore throat, passing cough, irritation). Manuka honey optional once the infusion has cooled.

Composition

A “measure” is a unit of proportion (e.g. a tablespoon) to adjust to the volume you want. Underlined ingredients link to their plant entry.

Preparation

Infusion

Pour boiling water over the plants (fresh or dried) and leave to infuse for 10 to 20 minutes, covered, then strain.

Long infusion

In a heatproof jar, cover with boiling water and leave to infuse for at least 3 to 4 h, or even overnight for a stronger preparation. Drunk during the day, iced or gently warmed.

Precautions

  • Mullein: strain the infusion well (the leaf hairs are irritating).
  • Sage: contains thujone, short use, not advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Licorice: not advised in case of high blood pressure or pregnancy; no prolonged use (beyond 4 to 6 weeks).
  • Thyme: in concentrated form, not advised during pregnancy or for young children.

These preparations belong to herbal tradition: they aim for comfort and support, do not “cure” anything and do not replace medical advice. Ask a doctor, pharmacist or herbalist before prolonged use, if under treatment, pregnant or breastfeeding, or for a child.
