When winter persists

Infusion Long infusion

A blend traditionally drunk alongside a flu-like state. Prepare it as a strong infusion and sip it regularly for general comfort.

Composition

A “measure” is a unit of proportion (e.g. a tablespoon) to adjust to the volume you want. Underlined ingredients link to their plant entry.

Preparation

Infusion

Pour boiling water over the plants (fresh or dried) and leave to infuse for 10 to 20 minutes, covered, then strain.

Long infusion

In a heatproof jar, cover with boiling water and leave to infuse for at least 3 to 4 h, or even overnight for a stronger preparation. Drunk during the day, iced or gently warmed.

Precautions

  • Elderberries: toxic raw, use only dried or cooked.
  • Echinacea: short-term use; not advised in case of an autoimmune disease (per the EMA).
  • Calendula: an Asteraceae, caution if allergic to the daisy family. Cleavers, on the other hand, are a Rubiaceae.
  • Cinnamon: coumarin (mainly in cassia cinnamon, far less in Ceylon cinnamon) can be undesirable at high doses and over a prolonged period.

These preparations belong to herbal tradition: they aim for comfort and support, do not “cure” anything and do not replace medical advice. Ask a doctor, pharmacist or herbalist before prolonged use, if under treatment, pregnant or breastfeeding, or for a child.
